A Few Things

Just a few things on I must bring up...

- I cannot wait for the MLB season to start, but I really can't wait for fantasy baseball to start. Basement League members owe a certain 2008 champ $5 each oww oww (I kid, don't worry about it). I really want to write a fantasy draft preview, but I don't want to reveal any players I covet. Is A-Rod still a first rounder???

- This Brian Cashman note cracked me up.

- The Mad Dog has been the only listenable person in sports media when it comes to this A-Rod business. I always considered the Mad Dog name to be a bit stupid, but his energy level is always full blast and he truly may be insane. His train of thought today was hilarious, he went from A-Rod, ragging on his wife, his cat "Yum-yum", and back to A-rod in two seconds, shouting the whole way through. True hero.

- Tim Fite is the fucking man.

- Don't read Batman R.I.P.

Best Haunting Ever?

I was reading the wikipedia entry on haunted places today at work. While I have a few gripes with parts of the article, I did find something totally excellent. Apparently, Owen Hart may haunt the arena in Kansas City where he tragically died. There are unexplained sounds, flickering lights, and (most badass of all) people have reported seeing Hart in his Blue Blazer suit hooked up to a cable at the top of the arena. Holy Shit!

Graduating into this economy

Don't do it.

What that Smell Like?

What I'm into at the moment:

MUSIC

Arthur Russell - "Love is Overtaking Me": This album was compiled from a bunch of Russell's unreleased songs, and, while it doesn't have the cohesion of a usual album, the grand majority of the 20 plus songs are lo-fi, mainly acoustic gems.

Neil Young - "Comes a Time": Certainly not his most well-known or groundbreaking album, this one has captivated me recently with its amazing (per usual) lyrics and laid-back, glorious melodies. Vintage Neil Young.

MOVIES

Milk - I just saw this over the weekend and both my girlfriend and I loved it. I wasn't aware of the real-life events about which the movie was made, so that certainly made it a bit more interesting. Sean Penn was certainly great, and although I think I enjoyed Slumdog's visual style more (Milk seemed to me very run-of-the-mill cinematographically), all in all I think they are about even for my movie of the year vote.

BOOKS

Kurt Vonnegut - "Slaughterhouse Five": Vonnegut totally rules. My favorite thing about this book is how it is essentially a science fiction book but is also amazingly elegant and poignant.

SPORTS

Just watched Pitt beat UConn, which got me pretty amped for March Madness. Bring it on baby.

Woooo!

Yo boys. I'm finally here.

I love what I see. This is truly a great idea and I can't believe we didn't do this earlier. I love how everyone has their own signature style. I can't really think of anything particularly rad to write about at the moment, just wanted to let everyone know that I'm now in on this. Count it.

WigCritic: Friday the 13th

Ok so, as promised, Friday the 13th wigcritic review.

Alright, Jason Cook, not Vorhees, don't go see this.  Haha.  This movie follows the hilarious, unbeatable, but at the same time, TRUE HORROR lacking formula, of ubiquitous boob shots, and lots of gore.  For example: see Hostel.
Now, for my unbiased outside opinion, the movie was your average horror slasher of today.  Nothing new, nothing different.  I was able to call down to the SECOND every kill that was going to occur (minus one).  Thusly the only thing that was really scary was the ultimate tool of every horror movie ever, the music!  All the cliches were there, and for the most part this movie played great tribute to the Jason movies of old.  For every moment that made you jump there was two moments that made you laugh.  Tons of very funny quality characters with one really great bro character.  One thing that I REALLY REALLY liked about this movie was a awesome spin that they put on the introductory scenes of the movie.  Tons of movies, tv shows, etc., have that opening scene that might introduce a character, set a stage, etc., then it cuts away and the title comes up.  However, this Friday the 13th has a mini movie as that opening stage setting scene.  It was very strange!  As one of my friends said (very minute spoiler alert), "I was confused, people were getting killed off pretty quickly..."
Now, gimme that bias...  Everybody knows that for me to hate a movie, it would take a lot.  No exception here folks.  I loved it, from the tribute paid to the original movies, to the hilarious lines, and even better, the hilarious deaths.  Count it.  Go out and see it!!!

The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

This video raises some interesting questions about this year's Best Picture nominee. I still think it's a decent/solid movie, but not always necessarily because of the writing. What do you think?

Goblin Cock

This past Friday I attended Goblin Cock's show at Harpers Ferry. I have never seen so many "devil horns" given by the band themselves. The keyboard player pretty much had a hand up the whole time, either giving the horns or holding a skull (there was an abundance of plastic skulls decorating the stage). The lead singer also had hilarious between song banter about cats, the pets and musical, and pet dragons, all spoken in demonic tone. While not being hilarious, there were pretty kick ass songs for headbanging. Goblin Cock is not really metal, but more of a hard indie band with guitar chugs thrown about. I highly suggest you go see the robed ones if you get a chance. And if you do, don't make the same mistake I did, buy an "I heart Goblin Cock" t-shirt.
